1949 East Turkestan Republic $20 used revenue stamp.

The East Turkestan Republic (technically the Second East Turkestan Republic), was established after a revolt against the Republic of China by ethnic Uyghurs and Kazakhs in the northernmost regions of Xinjiang Province, the Yili (Ili), Tacheng (Tarbaghatai) and Ashan (Altai) Districts, in late 1944. The ETR emerged from the Ili Rebellion in November 1944 and was initially backed by the Soviet Union, but the Soviets’ wartime alliance with the Republic of China (ROC) led to the cessation of aid. While a coalition government was formed including the Republic of China, the three districts and Xinjiang Province, the three districts became a de facto independent country.
