Outstanding collection of approximately 250 Airmail covers bearing more than 650 visually different Soviet stamps, all mailed from the Soviet Union to the same recipient in the United States between 1961 and early 1966. The collection is neatly organized in five handmade albums.
Although the correspondence originated from the same philatelist and was sent to the same address, this group represents a remarkable snapshot of Soviet postal history during the height of the Cold War.
The correspondence appears to have been assembled with a philatelic purpose. The covers bear different stamps that were likely used shortly after their release, suggesting that the sender was attempting to create a chronological record of new Soviet stamp issues on genuinely mailed covers.
All covers appear to be correctly franked at the 16-kopeck international airmail letter rate, providing an excellent study of contemporary Soviet postal rates and genuine postal usage. Rather than creating colorful philatelic combinations, the sender seems to have consistently used newly issued stamps to satisfy the required postal rate.
Approximately 800 major Soviet catalog numbers were issued between 1961 and early 1966, meaning that the 650+ different stamps represented here account for roughly two-thirds of all issues released during these years.
Ideal for Soviet Union collectors, postal history enthusiasts, Cold War correspondence specialists, thematic collectors, and collectors seeking a foundation for an advanced collection of stamps on cover.
